Citizenship by Investment

A certain number of countries have opened up their nationality to individuals and their families desirable to the nation due to significant contribution to the state. The concept of Citizenship by Investment has logically caught on in a number of countries who wish encourage talent and skill to their jurisdiction.

One of the ways in which citizenship can be acquired in Nevis is through investment by the purchase of an “approved real estate investment project” located in specified zoned areas on the island. To qualify for citizenship, the applicant must make either an investment of at least US$ 400,000 in one of the approved real-estate developments in addition to paying government fees, other fees and taxes, or alternatively making a contribution to the Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation (SIDF, a public charity) starting from US$ 250,000 (for a single applicant).

Investors of good character can make a substantial contribution towards the development of the Federation. Investors are then given the opportunity to apply for citizenship within the strict guidelines of the law and the relevant regulations.

Developers can make an application for their project to be designated as an “Approved Project” under the Citizenship by Investment Programme. An investor may qualify for citizenship under the real-estate option of the programme, by purchasing property in a designated “Approved Project” with a value of at least US$ 400,000.

AGRICULTURE & AGRO-PROCESSING

Agriculture

The Agricultural sector holds great potential prospects for investment. The road map to development in the agricultural sector is intended to reduce the country’s food importation bill through local production.

Other areas of investment include meat production, poultry meat production, fishing and aquaculture. Intensive and semi-intensive production systems for mutton, pork, and beef will become a necessity. Niche markets for goat milk and goat cheese present viable areas for development.

Biodiversity is encouraged in the Agricultural sector. There exists considerable investment potential in the offshore fisheries with a target on pelagic such as wahoo, dolphin, marlin and squid. Small scale “green water” aquaculture by producing tilapia which may ease the pressure on near-shore fish stocks.

Agro-Processing

The focal point for the agro-industrial sector is agro-processing. Scope for investment include the development of orchards, product development, marketing and distribution. Investors in this sector are free to take advantage of regional trade agreements derived from St. Kitts & Nevis membership in CARICOM and the OECS to gain access to wider markets.

INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

Information Communication Technology

ICT is a key technology and an interdisciplinary technology. It helps businesses to reduce costs, improve systems, boost innovation, and increase output. Not just confined to bettering the software and IT sector, ICT enhances existing technology across the wider economy thus termed as a growth driver.

The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) is aware of the significance that ICT plays as an enabler in today’s business world and seeks to develop the ICT sector as a means of satisfying local and international demand for ICT services.

Education plays an important role in the development of the type of human capital required to support the ICT industry. To this end the NIA partnered with the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis to implement numerous educational programs at primary and secondary level institutions.

GREEN OPPORTUNITIES

Renewable Energy

There has been a global shift to alternative energy and renewable energy by investing in companies that explore, harness and store solar, wind, hydroelectric, tidal wave, geothermal, biomass and biofuel energy.

As the entire world commits billions to the development of renewable energy, Nevis is blessed to have discovered its wealth of natural resources and natural power production through innovative avenues which are quite remarkable. The Island presents investment opportunities in GeothermalWind, Solar, and Other Alternative Energy. Nevis has the distinction of leading the Caribbean region and by extension the world in implementing a supply of clean and cost efficient energy.

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

Tapping Into Our Geothermal Reservoir

Unlike Wind and Solar, Geothermal is one of the few clean sources of energy that can provide baseload power without storage devices. With the concerted effort to develop new, cleaner energy technologies, geothermal’s ability to provide baseload power is attracting a lot of institutional investment with numerous success stories from U.S. enterprises.

With this advent of geothermal energy, Nevis will be uniquely placed within the sub-region as a low cost, stable and renewable energy supplier. Nevis is on its way to becoming the first carbon neutral location in the world.

The NIA welcomes proposals from potential developers with strong financial backing for the development of geothermal. The exploration phase is completed. It is anticipated that Nevis should be in a position to construct at least a 10 MW Geothermal Plant in the not too distant future.

WIND ENERGY

Yes, We Have Harnessed The Wind

Wind energy provides a clean, sustainable solution to global energy problems. It can be used as an alternative to fossil fuels in generating electricity, without the emission of greenhouse gases. It is inexhaustible and renewable. It is envisaged that wind power will make the most significant contribution to the attainment of international targets for green electricity.

A 2.2 MW Wind Farm has been constructed at Maddens Estate on Nevis and is currently supplying wind energy to the electricity grid. The Nevis Electricity Company Limited (Nevlec) is obligated to purchase up to 1.6 MW of energy from WindWatt (Developer) according to the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between the two companies. The PPA was signed on 14th July 2009 between Nevlec and WindWatt, the developers and owners of the Wind Farm. The Wind Resource contract between WindWatt and the Nevis Island Administration was signed on 14 July 2009. The Wind Farm consists of eight (8) 275 KW wind turbines. The Wind Farm is located on government leased land on Maddens Estate.

SOLAR ENERGY

Solar Energy

Solar energy is the fastest growing energy source in the world today, having recently passed Wind energy for this distinction. Solar energy can be used with renewable solar technologies to replace conventional energy systems that consume fossil fuels, thus helping to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere and helping to reduce greenhouse effect and global warming.

Viable proposals in solar powered electricity generation is encouraged. Tax concessions are available for companies and individuals purchasing Solar Water Heaters since January 2010.Two major companies on the island have joined the movement to reduce their energy consumption and carbon footprint. S.L. Horsford’s, a multiple trading, service and manufacturing company, and TDC Limited, the parent company of an umbrella of diversified companies, both launched projects to use solar generated energy for their businesses.
